Current Work | Other Tropics, Barclay & Crousse
Tuesday, April 23, 2019, 7 - 9pm
Sandra Barclay and Jean Pierre Crousse founded Barclay & Crousse Architecture in 1994 in Paris. Headquartered in Lima since 2006, the studio works on projects that explore the relationship between landscape, climate, and architecture.
For their Current Work lecture, Barclay and Crousse will discuss several buildings in Peru:
- Paracas Museum, an archeological museum in the Peruvian coastal desert whose exposed concrete and polished cement exterior blends in with the surrounding red dunes.
- Place of Remembrance, the winner of a national architecture competition for a cultural center in Lima’s waterfront.
- Regional Government Headquarters, a new office building in the city of Moquegua whose thoughtful design created a new civic center. The architecture integrates the structure with a public square, a street mall, a school, and a sports facility.
Sandra Barclay studied architecture in Lima, Paris, and Santiago, Chile, where she received a master’s degree in landscape and territory from Universidad Diego Portales. She currently teaches at Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru. In 2018, Barclay received the Women in Architecture award from The Architectural Review.
Jean Pierre Crousse studied architecture in Lima, Milan, and Santiago, Chile, where he also received a master’s degree in landscape and territory from Universidad Diego Portales. He is currently director of the masters program in architecture at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru.
The firm’s design for a new academic building at the University of Piura won the 2018 Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize.
In 2016, the partners curated the Peruvian Pavilion at the 15th Venice Architecture Biennale, which obtained the Special Mention of the jury.
The lecture will be followed by a conversation with architect Stella Betts, a founding partner of LEVENBETTS.
This lecture is co-sponsored with The Architectural League of New York. Tickets are free for Cooper Union students and faculty with valid ID, and League members.
