The Cooper Union for The Advancement of Science and Art operates within a two-semester calendar (fall and spring). Most classes are scheduled Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. See building hours for when buildings are open.

Fall 2024 Term
Mon, Aug 5 Payment deadline for students who registered for classes in Spring 2024  
Thurs, Aug 15 Students who have not paid or not enrolled in a payment plan will be deregistered from Fall 2024 classes by 5pm Students are advised to review the terms of their payment plans.
Wed, Aug 28 - Mon, Sept 2 Welcome Week Orientation Events, Wed - Mon
Fri, Aug 30 Welcome Back Picnic Community picnic to welcome new students, all invited
Mon, Sept 2 Labor Day Academic Buildings closed
Tues, Sept 3 Fall 2024 semester classes begin  
Tues, Sept 3 Last day for registration refund Last day to drop all courses and receive a full refund of paid registration fee. The registration fee is non-refundable after Sept 3.
Tues, Sept 3 - Tues, Sept 10 Add/drop period Students can add or drop courses with advisor assistance
Tues, Sept 10 Course add/drop deadline Last day to add/drop with advisor assistance. Last day to fully withdraw or take a Leave of Absence from The Cooper Union and receive full refund of paid tuition, and fees other than the Registration Fee.

Tues, Oct 29 Last day to withdraw from classes After the withdrawal deadline, students are not permitted to withdraw. In the event of extenuating circumstances, students are advised to meet with their advisor.

  • Founded by inventor, industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper in 1859, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art offers education in art, architecture and engineering, as well as courses in the humanities and social sciences.

  • “My feelings, my desires, my hopes, embrace humanity throughout the world,” Peter Cooper proclaimed in a speech in 1853. He looked forward to a time when, “knowledge shall cover the earth as waters cover the great deep.”

  • From its beginnings, Cooper Union was a unique institution, dedicated to founder Peter Cooper's proposition that education is the key not only to personal prosperity but to civic virtue and harmony.

  • Peter Cooper wanted his graduates to acquire the technical mastery and entrepreneurial skills, enrich their intellects and spark their creativity, and develop a sense of social justice that would translate into action.
