❤️ Milton

Milton Glaser A'51 is perhaps the most famous graphic designer to have graduated from The Cooper Union. Having co-founded a collective while still a student, in the late 1940s, with his classmates, Seymour Chwast, Ed Sorel, and Reynold Ruffins, Glaser never stopped creating. His work is recognizable, but at the same time there is so much more still to discover since he was simply so prolific. A sharp, ever-working mind with an equally active pencil in hand, his output is diverse and often surprising.
Glaser passed away in 2020 when the world was on lockdown. Cooper Union brought together numerous people who knew him to honor his life and legacy and share remembrances. Amongst that group was Mirko Ilić, a long-time friend of both Milton Glaser and of the Herb Lubalin Study Center of Design and Typography. About two years ago, Ilić kindly offered to donate part of his personal collection of Milton Glaser’s work to the Lubalin Center.
The material on display as part of ❤️ Milton, an exhibition launched as part of the 2023 Typographics festival, is a small portion of over four hundred items that Ilić generously gifted to the archive. The exhibition showcases a range of some Glaser's better-known work alongside designs that may be surprising for people to discover. This is the first installation of that material for Cooper Union, but likely not the last.
To see more of Glaser's work and more by scheduling a visit to the archive at lubalin@cooper.edu. The Lubalin Center is extremely thankful to Mirko Ilić for his donation, are delighted to be able to share it with the world.
