Pluriversal, Bewildered, and Otherwise Lecture Series | Sigil Collective — Monuments of the Everyday: Condemned to Hope
Tuesday, October 26, 2021, 12 - 2pm
This presentation will be conducted in-person and through Zoom. Zoom account registration is required, please register in advance here.
Sigil is a collective based in Beirut, Marrakech, and New York City. It was founded in 2014 by Salim al-Kadi, Khaled Malas, Alfred Tarazi and Jana Traboulsi. Along with multiple interlocutors and associates, many primarily based in Syria, Sigil has produced a series of representational and site-specific interventions titled ‘monuments of the everyday’. These projects seek to explore the marvellous and terrifying metamorphoses of the Arab landscape marked by historical and contemporary struggles. Sigil’s projects embark on committed inquiries regarding the relations between radical built gestures, the role of narrative in design, and attempts to challenge ongoing violence by evoking transmutational hope. This work has been widely exhibited, published, and collected. Recent commissions include those at the 2019 Milano Design Triennale and the 2019 Biennale d’Architecture d’Orléans.
Khaled Malas (architect and art historian) and Salim al-Kadi (architect) will present recent works followed by a discussion moderated by Nada Ayad.
The in-person lecture is open to Cooper Union students, faculty, and staff in room 315F. This event is free and accessible to the public through Zoom.
