"When you take a flower in your hand and really look at it, it's your world for the moment." Georgia O'Keefe

Flowers have been an inspiration and point of departure for artists across centuries. In this online workshop, we will continue and extend this tradition using a familiar subject as a catalyst for our own explorations into unfamiliar territory where the flower can perform simultaneously as figure, still life, and landscape.

Each week, we will look at examples from art history, focusing on a different aspect or theme while working across mediums and sensibilities–painting/drawing/collage as well as representation/abstraction. Universal and personal themes will be explored while also seeing the flower as an arena for discussions about line, form, composition, color and texture.

Our goal will be to see flowers with fresh eyes, through a wide angled lens into unfolding worlds within worlds.

This class is ideal for anyone from the beginner to the more advanced student who wants to explore subject, meaning and materials.

  • Founded by inventor, industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper in 1859, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art offers education in art, architecture and engineering, as well as courses in the humanities and social sciences.

  • “My feelings, my desires, my hopes, embrace humanity throughout the world,” Peter Cooper proclaimed in a speech in 1853. He looked forward to a time when, “knowledge shall cover the earth as waters cover the great deep.”

  • From its beginnings, Cooper Union was a unique institution, dedicated to founder Peter Cooper's proposition that education is the key not only to personal prosperity but to civic virtue and harmony.

  • Peter Cooper wanted his graduates to acquire the technical mastery and entrepreneurial skills, enrich their intellects and spark their creativity, and develop a sense of social justice that would translate into action.
