Basic Collage gives new and returning students fundamental tools and techniques for working with collage. Beginning with a black-and-white project, students investigate basic design principles such as balance and rhythm. Lessons about the use of color in collage enable students to create a variety of color effects and moods. Demonstrations on cutting, gluing, and working with water-based paints inform students’ work and teach how to construct a collage from scratch. Methods for working with process, composition, and the basics of design provide pathways for students to define and strengthen their individual voices. Art historical and contemporary examples of collage inform student’s ongoing work.
Assignments include a landscape, still life, and a portrait. Photomontage, painted paper, and working with found materials are covered. Weekly critiques build dialogue around students’ work and foster peer learning. This course is open to students at all experience levels, with fundamental skills emphasized.
