Through two collaborative endeavors to design and fabricate two installation projects in the Spring 2019 Structures I class, led by Professor Julian Palacio, students were encouraged to use materials and prototypes as fundamental pedagogical tools for the development of what could be considered a ‘structural intuition.’ Both experiments, although launched from a common intellectual platform, differed in their contexts, location, and materiality and were informed by what may seem opposite but complimentary sets of constraints. However, in spite of their differences, the installations were conceived as extensions and physical manifestations of the concepts and ideas discussed through lectures, readings, and precedent analysis. The first project, IBEJI, was a collaboration with dieFirma, a new art exhibition gallery in the Cooper Square area dedicated to providing a space for the local community to engage with thinkers and makers. The second project, Manifold / Corps et Cadre, was an installation for the 14th Festival des Architectures Vives (FAV), an annual architecture festival that takes place in Montpellier, France.
