The artist residency program of the Summer Art Intensive was discontinued as of 2019. The below is kept for historical purposes.

The Cooper Union offers four artist residencies within the Summer Art Intensive Program. The fellowships will be given to outstanding visual artists who will spend one month, June 28th though July 30th, on-campus developing a new project in the Painting and Drawing Department. The residency, which began in 1993, was created to support teaching artists whose professional practice in action, would contribute to the education of the summer program students. The residency provides spacious, sky lit professional studios, and an exhibition honoring the residents’ work. The exhibition will be organized by the Cooper Union immediately following the residency in conjunction with the pre-college Summer Art Intensive program. Applications will open in mid December.

Kay Healy

Through her life-sized drawn, painted, and screen-printed fabric installations, Kay Healy investigates themes of home, loss, displacement, and resilience with interview-based projects. Healy received a BA from Oberlin College, and a MFA from the University of the Arts. Her installation Coming Home was purchased by the Pennsylvania Convention Center, and her work was supported by the Independence Foundation’s Fellowship in the Arts. Healy has had solo exhibitions at Gallery Madison Park in New York City, Gallery Septima in Tokyo, Japan, the Windgate Gallery in Fort Smith, Arkansas, the Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts, and the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts.

Sophia Sobers

Sophia Sobers is an interdisciplinary artist specializing in installations and site specific work. She creates soft sculptures and ambient soundscapes and is interested in investigating the boundaries between science, technology, nature and the spiritual. She has an MFA in Digital + Media from RISD and a BS in Architecture from the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Megan Stroech

Megan Stroech is an artist living and working in Brooklyn, NY. Stroech received an MFA in Printmaking from Illinois State University in 2012, and BFA in Studio Art from the University of Texas at Austin in 2008. Stroech was recently awarded the Merit Fellowship at Vermont Studio Center and Staff Development Grant at Parsons School of Design. Stroech has completed residencies at Vermont Studio Center, Anderson Ranch Art Center, Wassaic Project, Chicago Artists Coalition, and ACRE. Recent exhibitions include: EXPO Chicago Fair, Field Projects (NYC), ROCKELMANN& (Berlin), FJORD (Philadelphia), CES Gallery (LA) and an upcoming feature in New American Paintings Magazine’s Northeastern Issue #140.

Maureen St. Vincent

Maureen St. Vincent was born in San Luis Obispo, California and currently lives and works in the Bay Area. She received her BA from San Francisco State University and graduated from Hunter College’s MFA program with an emphasis in painting. St. Vincent has exhibited her work nationally and most notably at Regina Rex Gallery in New York City. Her work has been mentioned in Artnet News, Brooklyn Rail, and Art of Choice. She was awarded an artist residency at East Side International in Los Angeles, and was their guest curator in the fall of 2018. She is represented by Y2K agency based in New York City.

  • Founded by inventor, industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper in 1859, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art offers education in art, architecture and engineering, as well as courses in the humanities and social sciences.
