This semester, The Cooper Union welcomed Troy Cogburn as its new vice president for enrollment, a role in which he will be responsible for admissions, financial aid, international student management, and the registrar’s office. Cogburn, who previously served as VP for enrollment and marketing at Manhattanville University, arrives with more than 15 years of experience in education enrollment management. In 2023, he was recognized by the Business Council of Westchester as a “40 Under 40 Rising Star” for his leadership and mentorship in higher education. We asked him to share some of his perspectives on Cooper and college admissions.

Why is higher education important to you?

I believe that knowledge is power, and being a first-generation college student, I recognize that college can not only offer an underserved, underrepresented, and/or undervalued student the opportunity for professional and socio-economic advancement for themselves, but can also make a positive impact on the family and community they surround themselves with.

What do you see as the biggest issues or concerns for prospective college students today?

College affordability and food insecurity are challenges that many students are grappling with, and institutions of higher education are trying to do a better job to support them. The commitment of the community at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art to tackle these challenges in a serious way, considering both the near- and long-term obstacles, is among the things that attracted me to this historic institution.

What are you most looking forward to in your new role at Cooper?

I am looking forward to interacting with students, faculty, and staff to better understand the culture and academic rigor of the Cooper community so that I can tell an honest story when speaking with prospective students. And I am excited to collaborate with community members on enhancing the experience for all who enter The Hub to speak with someone from the admissions or student financial services teams.

  • Founded by inventor, industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper in 1859, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art offers education in art, architecture and engineering, as well as courses in the humanities and social sciences.

  • “My feelings, my desires, my hopes, embrace humanity throughout the world,” Peter Cooper proclaimed in a speech in 1853. He looked forward to a time when, “knowledge shall cover the earth as waters cover the great deep.”

  • From its beginnings, Cooper Union was a unique institution, dedicated to founder Peter Cooper's proposition that education is the key not only to personal prosperity but to civic virtue and harmony.

  • Peter Cooper wanted his graduates to acquire the technical mastery and entrepreneurial skills, enrich their intellects and spark their creativity, and develop a sense of social justice that would translate into action.
